Derick Kirk Foundation, Inc. Announces
2010 Scholarship Recipients

On June 5, 2010, The Derick Kirk Foundation,
Inc. announced the inaugural winners of the Derick Kirk Memorial
Scholarship. The 2010 recipients are Ali Atkinson and Taylor Giorgio.
Both students are June graduates of Capital High School in Charleston,
West Virginia. Board Director Patrick Donahoe made the formal presentation
at the June 6, 2010 performance of the West Virginia Youth Symphony
Orchestra. While the June 6, 2010 concert was their farewell performance
of sorts with the West Virginia Youth Symphony – both seniors
are veteran members of the Orchestra – it really marks the
beginning of what will most certainly be a fulfilling and rewarding
career in music and for Atkinson and Giorgio.
Both students received $1000 scholarships to be applied to their
college tuition. Ali will be attending Brigham Young University
while Taylor has been accepted to West Virginia University.
“Because of their talent, dedication and commitment to music,
the Derick Kirk Foundation is delighted to recognize both Ali’s
and Taylor’s accomplishments
and help them further their music education,” noted Donahoe,
Foundation Treasurer.
The mission of the Derick Kirk Foundation, Inc. is to support and
fund music education and development in grades kindergarten through
12. The Foundation was created in 2007 when noted musician Derick
Kirk succumbed to a rare form of cancer that same year at 28. Derick
was working on his Masters in Music at Marshall University at the
time of his death. Today, his spirit continues through the ongoing
work of the 501.c.3 charity.

Thanks for visiting derickkirk.org. This
organization was created in memory of Derick Kirk, who passed from
us on July 25, 2007. He was only 28 years old, but his musical legacy
will live on as we honor his memory by helping young
musicians develop their talents.
